President’s Cup
What can you say? Tiger Woods has again demonstrated why he is the best golfer in the world. Besides the obvious fact of going undefeated in his matches, the mental fortitude to hit two huge shots on the final two holes separates him from any other competitor. The putt he made on the 17th green in Saturdays morning round was nothing short of amazing. That putt was a “must make” for him and Stricker to continue play. Weir would probably make his put and the Americans would have lost 2 and 1.
However, my shot of the day is the 2nd shot on the Par 5 18th.
I love the fact that when he hit that long iron shot (there has been some discussions as the whether it was a 3 iron or a 4 iron) he knew it was a great shot. He followed that shot down the fairway as it tucked in for a 8 foot eagle that was ultimately conceded to win the match.
The President’s Cup is great golf to watch. Its quite a bit different than watching a normal tournament during the course of the season. During a run-of-the-mill tournament, you an tell that the players are playing for a paycheck, FedEx Cup points, automatic bids and whatever else is in it for the individual player. When you watch the President’s Cup, it is palpable that there is something more on the line. They are playing for their country, for pride, and for bragging rights!
I wish they would play the President’s Cup and/or Ryder Cup more often.
